SCSSD is proud to host free community events exclusively for SCSSD residents. Through 2016, SCSSD has hosted 39 separate Community Events. Approximately 21,065 residents have participated in these events, an average of 540 residents per event.
- The first event was a Heat Relief Party in July 2005, whereupon SCSSD distributed over 500 fans to senior residents.
- Also in 2005, SCSSD hosted the first Children’s Halloween Party, now an annual event held outdoors at the American Swedish Historical Museum in FDR Park. Event participation has been growing over the years, including a record high attendance of 1,350 residents for the 12th annual party in 2016.
- In 2007, SCSSD initiated the very popular Document Shredding Event for Identity Theft Safety typically held in April of each year on the Saturday following Tax Day. In ten years of hosting this event, SCSSD has recycled 43.6 tons of paper (the equivalent of saving 740 trees) and collected 8.6 tons of electronics for responsible recycling, with over 6,230 residents attending.
- In response to feedback from Community Surveys, SCSSD has increased community event offerings in recent years, including Family Fun Day and Free Movie & Dinner events at Xfinity Live, sponsorship of eight movie nights and two outdoor concerts in Marconi Plaza Park, and a vehicle VIN etching event.
