Community Events

SCSSD is proud to host free community events exclusively for SCSSD residents.
Here are some examples:

2005 Heat Relief Party - Free Fan Giveaway to Seniors

In the midst of Philadelphia’s 2005 summer heat wave, SCSSD Board Members wanted to make sure neighborhood seniors were cool and safe. SCSSD quickly purchased two truckloads of portable fans and the first-ever SCSSD Community Event was born — a Heat Relief Party with free fan giveaway to neighborhood seniors. On July 27, 2005, over 500 neighborhood seniors, along with their helpful family and friends, lined up at the SCSSD offices to receive their new fans. Philadelphia celebrities including former Flyers’ head coach Ken Hitchcock, Philadelphia Phantoms mascot Phlex, the 76ers Dance Team, and the Phillie Phanatic all helped seniors carry the free fans to their cars. Neighbors were also treated to free water ice and heat safety literature furnished by the City Health Department. SCSSD later donated leftover fans to Katrina victims being housed in Philadelphia emergency facilities.

Annual Children’s Halloween Party

Since 2005, SCSSD has been hosting an Annual Children’s Halloween Party for SCSSD residents. This party includes trick-or-treat gifts, pumpkin painting, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artistry, DJ music with dancing, and complimentary photos with special guest characters.

Annual Document Shredding Event

Since 2007, SCSSD has been hosting an Annual Document Shredding Event to promote identity theft safety and recycling. In April of each year, SCSSD hires a shredding truck that conveniently parks for one full hour in each of the four Community Districts, providing residents with a convenient opportunity to safely dispose of expired personal documents in an environmentally responsible fashion. This event also includes the distribution of City recycling bins (when available), educational literature on recycling and identity theft safety, and special gifts that have included personal safety alarms, pedometers, emergency preparedness kits, and reusable grocery bags.
