Community Events

SCSSD is proud to host free community events exclusively for SCSSD residents.  Through 2017, SCSSD has hosted and sponsored over 45 separate Community Events.  Approximately 24,000 residents have participated in these events, an average of 533 residents per event.

  • The first event was a Heat Relief Party in July 2005, whereupon SCSSD distributed over 500 fans to senior residents.
  •  Also in 2005, SCSSD hosted the first Children’s Halloween Party, now an annual event held outdoors at the American Swedish Historical Museum in FDR Park. Event participation has been growing over the years, including a record high attendance of 1,350 residents for the 12th annual party in 2016.
  • In 2007, SCSSD initiated the very popular Document Shredding Event for Identity Theft Safety typically held in April of each year on the Saturday following Tax Day.  In 11 years of hosting this event, SCSSD has recycled 53.2 tons of paper (the equivalent of saving 903 trees) and collected 10.6 tons of electronics for responsible recycling, with over 6,900 residents attending.
  • In response to feedback from Community Surveys, SCSSD has increased community event offerings in recent years, including Family Fun Day and Free Movie & Dinner events at Xfinity Live, sponsorship of 9 movie nights and 3 outdoor concerts in Marconi Plaza Park, a vehicle VIN etching event, and sponsorship of free bike and boat rentals in FDR Park during movie nights.
