2005 Heat Relief Party - Free Fan Giveaway to Seniors
In the midst of Philadelphia's 2005 summer heat wave, SCSSD Board Members wanted to make sure neighborhood seniors were cool and safe. SCSSD quickly purchased two truckloads of portable fans and the first-ever SCSSD Community Event was born -- a Heat Relief Party with free fan giveaway to neighborhood seniors.
On July 27th, unfortunately one of the hottest days in 2005, over 500 neighborhood seniors, along with their helpful family and friends, lined up at the SCSSD offices to receive their new fans. Philadelphia celebrities including Flyers' head coach Ken Hitchcock, Philadelphia Phantoms mascot Phlex, the 76ers Dance Team, and the Phillie Phanatic all helped seniors carry the free fans to their cars. Neighbors were also treated to free water ice and heat safety handouts furnished by the City Health Department. SCSSD later donated leftover fans to Katrina victims being housed in Philadelphia emergency facilities. View Photos
